Invictus is Latin for "unconquerable," and a fitting title for the poem that explores themes of resilience in the face of adversity. It is also the title of the Olympic-style competitive event aimed at exhibiting the unconquerable spirit of wounded and injured service men and women, The Invictus Games.
The goal of Invictus Fastpitch is to teach young women perseverance, adaptability, tenacity, control, responsibility, and integrity through the sport of fastpitch softball. Invictus is a reflection of how one responds to adversity, and how to stay strong and confident in all situations, control the controllables, and use both success and failure as tools for growth, as an athlete and as a future adult.
The phoenix bird is our mascot, and symbolizes the cycle of life, death, rebirth, transformation, and renewal. The phoenix also represents hope and new beginnings in its ability to rise from its own ashes, stronger than before. These are life skills that we hope to teach our players through our own experiences and theirs: difficulty and loss can make you stronger if you use it correctly. Our motto, "We Rise," is a derivative of Maya Angelou's poem "And Still I Rise" about a woman's bold responses to the judgments and prejudices that all women face in life. As Ms. Angelou once stated, "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated."
Overcome obstacles. Rise from your ashes. We will play hard, fight to the end, and, regardless of the outcome, we will rise.
